Everyday Dose Of Reality
I have explained in other posts this winter we will be running different heating tests in the house, and the family will be locked down in in the gym aka living room/dinning room. The gym is attached to the kitchen and my chest freezer/ER rooms, all of which do not have a single window for outside light. Now, we all know what happens to a person that goes an entire winter without daylight in a room don’t we? They go BONKERS! Also, in light of all the solar and wind experiments the husband has going we have decided to postpone the skylights in the gym ceiling until spring. After much thought, implementing some of his ideas and experiments is more important since it will save us a ton of money over the winter months. Plus some of what will be put in place before winter directly relates to the new heating to be installed over next Spring and Summer.
So…I had to come up with a new idea for daylight to fend off the winter bonkerness. I think I have an idea.
This is the ONLY door to the outside world from the rooms I listed. This is the side gym door. The center section of this door is an insert piece. It is a funky sized door even for a commercial door and let me tell you commercial doors are expensive. Not to mention ugly.
After removing the door we found you had to unscrew one side of the door to remove the center panel. My idea was to find another door the same depth with a thermal double pane to fit as the insert to the gym door. I really do strongly believe having some daylight in the gym, which is pretty much the “bat cave”, is going to make the difference of my showing up on the 10 O’clock news come February ;).
Also, a few posts back I mentioned a store in Grand Rapids, Restore. This is a place that is linked to Habitat for Humanity. They take donations. When a house is being gutted or demo’ed, they get a call to come remove a tub, windows, stoves or whatnot. Extra materials from Habitat for Humanity, left overs from building a house are also put in the store. Extra floor tiles, paint, wood trim and such. The public can go in and buy these items and the money funnels right back into building new houses for the cause. Excellent program and we have gotten a lot of things from there. The other day while at the store I found this door, exterior double pane thermal door with a FULL GLASS PANE! Just what we needed for our gym door. However, when we measured the side door we measured the outside edges because this was before we even thought of the insert part of the plan. Turns out after getting it home, it is the perfect fit to the gym door insert. That is right, this door is staving off the chances of seeing me on CNN because of some horrific case of cabin fever people.
