Projects & Recipes
Yep, you read that right. Toilet paper roll art. Recently on Pintrest someone showed me some pictures and I thought to myself, I can do that. A friend stopped by a few days ago and as she walked up to the house she saw me sitting in my office with the windows open. She said, “Whatcha doin?” I answered, “toilet paper roll art.” She came in the house to find me at my desk and chest deep in toilet paper rolls. “You have too much time on your hands”, she said. Truth is I have no time really. I run around all day and when I do sit down to take a break, I work on projects. So… is that technically a break? Yesterday on a couple breaks, I finished two roll art pieces for the house and made what Macgyver is calling a “redneck chandelier”. If you haven’t seen toilet paper roll art, let me tell you it is very cool and extremely easy. Very few things are needed and patience is not one of them.
What you are going to need:
10 – 15 empty toilet paper rolls
ruler or measuring tape
hot glue gun
spray paint in any color you desire
Doing the deed:
Take your roll and hold a ruler along the length of it. I used a Sharpie marker, and put a dot every half inch. Next cut the sections you have marked. When you cut the roll you are going to have to flatten it to cut it. Don’t worry, the art you make is perfect for the oval shape you will have from mashing the roll flat to cut it. Now, poof the cut roll pieces back open to get your oval shape, and just start laying out the pieces to make a shape or an abstract form. Once you have something you like start gluing the pieces together with your glue gun. Once you have completed your piece, you might have fine strings of hot glue, don’t panic. Take a hair dryer and turn it on high. Blow your art piece and watch the glue strings disappear. The heat from the dryer melts the glue strings away. Once all the strings are gone, spray paint your art piece. Solid contrasting color from your walls or even a few different colors is pretty in a gradient effect of shading. The designs are endless, have fun and let it just flow. You wont look at a toilet paper roll the same again. Enjoy!
